As many people try to start their own internet business, the need for great SEO - Search Engine Optimization is in high demand. It seems like there are thousands of experts and more than a million different views on how SEO works.

We can get close to guess what the search engines like Google, Yahoo or Bing want from us in order to rank high on their search result pages. But we will never know for sure.

Many of the internet business owners try to trick the search engines or manipulate the rankings, but that have worked only for a while. Now these beasts are smarter than millions of SEO experts.

So how do you actually rank higher? What do you need to do in order to achieve free listing on top of the first page in Google or Yahoo?

1. Make sure you learn how to use Meta tags correctly.
Yes, I mean the Title, Description and Keywords tags. Many internet marketers are trying to abuse this by stuffing so many keywords in them or filling out these tags with all Capital letters. That is not good. It's like shouting at the search engines - "Hey Google, pick me!" And you know what, they won't pick you. Also make sure that each one of your pages have a new title text, new description and new keywords. Only then you can nicely optimize each one of your web pages correctly.

2. Use proper headers on you on-page SEO.

That means that you have to make sure that you include your keywords you want to rank for in H1, H2 and H3 headers mainly. Also if you can fit H4 header, it would be really great.

3. Write a web page or post that is at least 450 words long.
Anything shorter than that is being frown at from all the major search engines these days. They think that it takes at least 450 words or more to fully elaborate on the topic that would be great and informative for the readers.

4. Do not over optimize your content on your website.
For example, your text on a web page is 450 words, do not try to write it only for the search engines. You need to make sure that the text will be readable by normal humans and not search engine robots. Just sprinkle a keyword you want to optimize on top of the page, in the middle, at the end and add some variations of the keyword in your text. To make it easier for you, just add your keyword after about 100 or 150 words of text.

5. Do not use tricks!
Many people use tricks like write your keywords after or before the article in the same color as your background color. That is a big time spam and search engines can de-index you from their rankings and ban your site forever or at least for a very long time. It is not worth it. Trust me.

6. Increase your web site popularity by gaining backlinks from many sources.
By adding backlinks that point to your main domain and the URLs of your internal pages, you gain a trust in the eyes of search engines. When the search engines see that your site is gaining popularity like this, they will know that your site is in demand and has to offer very good quality information for the readers.

There are many ways to get backlinks for your site. You can write articles like this one and submit it to major article directories. You can use social bookmarks and share your site online. You can create videos and submit it to video sites like YouTube. Other very popular way is to post blog comments on related blogs to your site. When you add a great blog comment that is on topic, you will be able to leave a link to your site. And much more.

Now before you start hunting for backlinks I have to warn you. Try not to gain a huge amounts of these links back to your site in short period of time. If your site is new, 5 to 10 backlinks a day should be fine.
