What is AdSense?

AdSense is Google's contextual advertising system which allows website owners and publishers to serve relevant ads within their content and earn revenues if a visitor clicks on that ad. These ads typically look like short text banners with a headline, a small description and a link to the advertisers website.

In order to fully understand AdSense, we must also look at the other side of Google advertising picture, Google AdWords. This program is used by advertisers to buy traffic and leads to their products, services and websites on a cost per click (CPC) basis. The advertisers can set a monthly budget and decide how much they may be willing to pay each time a visitor or potential lead clicks on their ad. If no one clicks on the ad, the advertisers don't pay.

The advertisers don't normally decide the placement of these ads (although this is an available option) and rely on Google to find relevant websites within its content network to display these ads. This is where participating AdSense publishers come in to picture as they simply Google's AdSense code and paste them in their content.

The placement, design and style of these ads is entirely upto the publisher but Google provides strict guidelines on where, how and how many of these ads can be published.

Once published, AdSense is able to scan or "read" the content and match ads to the specific keywords found within the content for relevancy. AdSense is also able to track visitor behaviour, interest and history to also match ads. For eg if a visitor is on a page about carpet cleaning and the last three pages the user visited about travel, AdSense is able to detect and display ads matching this pattern.

How do I make money from AdSense?

Google shares 68% of the cost per click revenues with the publisher serving ads within their website or content. For eg if a visitor clicks on an ad from within your website which has a cost per click bid of $1, you may be entitled to receive 68c for every valid click.

In third quarter of 2010 Google reported earnings of $2.2 billion from AdSense alone, which was approximately 30% of it total revenues for that quarter. This would suggest that AdSense publishers would have received $1.5 billion in earnings from Google for that quarter alone!

Clearly a lot of money can be made from this program provided you can create websites, provide good quality relevant content and bring plenty of visitors.
