AFF - Why Some Internet Affiliate Programs Fail!

Often internet affiliate programs are doomed from the very beginning. This is generally due to the wrong keyword theme being chosen causing the wrong domain to be chosen. If you don't do your homework at the beginning, you may be setting yourself up for disappointment and ultimate failure with your affiliate marketing program..

Picking a top affiliate program is certainly what we all want to do, but deciding how to market it is very important. There are several factors in putting together an affiliate marketing strategy and it all starts with picking a top affiliate program and then researching  to find the right keyword as your theme keyword and then choosing your domain name.

If you've picked your affiliate program, it's time to do the research to pick a keyword that will allow you to succeed. This is where you set yourself up for success or failure. You may have picked the top affiliate program, but if you pick the wrong keyword to launch your affiliate web site, you may be disappointed. There are four  important factors  in picking your theme keyword:

  1. Relevance: Your keyword has to be relevant for the product you're selling. In other words you wouldn't pick e-books for your keyword unless you were selling e-books. Sounds logical, but you'd be surprised how many keywords are chosen that don't fit the product.
  2. Traffic:  Your keyword selection should show enough traffic to give you an opportunity to get visitors to your affiliate web site. The top ranked web site on Google will typically get about 42% of the searches for a given keyword. If your keyword shows traffic of at least 3,000 per month, it means you may get a little more that 1200 visitors per month to your affiliate web site. Of course there's not guarantee, but that's a good rule of thumb.
  3. Competition: Knowing how much competition you'll have for your keyword is critical. One way to determine how much competition you'll have is to type your keyword into the Google search bar in quotation marks. A good rule of thumb is that you don't want more that about 50,000 competing pages using that keyword. More than that and your affiliate web site probably won't make it to the top of the search engines.
  4. Profit Potential: If there isn't good profit potential, it doesn't matter about the other 3 factors. One way to determine the profit potential is to see how many pay per click affiliate programs there are for your keyword. If you see several, it generally means that people are making enough money that they're willing to advertise with PPC.

From the keyword research you've done you should make a list of at least 10 keywords that fit the criteria of enough affiliate traffic and commercial value. It's now time to choose your domain name. If you can get a domain name that matches one of your keyword choices, you have a good chance of getting the top spot on Google. This is rare, but it does happen.

If you've done a good job up to this point, you have the foundation of a good affiliate marketing strategy. Internet affiliate programs that fail don't start out with the best affiliate marketing strategy.
