If you're an affiliate marketer or are planning to become one, then you should know that doing SEO keyword research is a very important task you need to carry out before you build a website. You want to build your site around keywords that are profitable and will pull traffic from the search engines once your site gets indexed and ranked.

Keyword research is more art than science and there are many ways to go about building that all-important keyword list. Many internet marketers use tools like Market Samurai or Micro Niche Finder for that research. The appeal of these desktop software apps is that they run on your PC and you pay for them once. If there's a downside to using them, it's that they can be somewhat slow at collating all the information required to determine the stats on keywords and determine if they're potentially profitable or not.

Typically, you give the app a seed keyword; it then goes off and looks for a list of related keywords. Some analysis is then performed on each keyword such as the number of monthly searches it gets, what AdSense would pay out for the keyword and other metrics. Using filters, you can then narrow down an initial list of hundreds of keywords to just those that will likely be good earners.

After that, sizing up the competition is next. Yes, maybe you found what looks to be some good keywords, but checking out the competition you may find that these keywords are in an ultra-competitive niche and you've very little chance of being able to rank your site for those keywords. And no ranking means no traffic.

You may have to repeat this process a couple of times before you happen on a set of keywords that you do stand a chance of turning to your advantage. And it all takes time. To do keyword research properly is a time consuming process.

One thing I've always found difficult is to come up with niches to research. You can get some ideas by looking at the magazines in your local store, flipping through them and seeing what's advertised. But that method leaves a whole world of untapped niches and ideas that would never occur to you or that you'd still never discover.

Dreaming up niches to research is also a time consuming exercise in itself.

In order to be more efficient in how you research niches and do your keyword research SEO, you need to find the right tool for the job. Let's face it, tools cost money but an up-front expense can save you loads further down the line. It's all a question of how much your personal time is worth to you.
