In the affiliate marketing world, as in Internet marketing in general, there is a tendency to divide areas of focus into niche affiliate marketing and mainstream marketing. In actual fact they are all niches, as a niche is just one area of focus. But no doubt through the egos of the big-dog marketers, selling to other marketers has been termed mainstream, while in fact its a smaller niche than most.

Be that as it may, unless you have a strong background in marketing before coming online, you're best to avoid the mainstream market and focus on a sub-niche of one of the big niches like health & fitness, kids, travel, etcetera. There are millions upon millions of potential affiliate marketing leads interested in these niches, so even sub-niches can be very profitable.

For example, within the health & fitness category are sub-niches like fitness or holistic health. In the former there are e-books, exercise videos, workout programs and fitness equipment being sold online, and each of these areas has affiliate programs you can promote. If you choose the latter, there are no end to the possibilities as you start affiliate marketing, from the numerous how-to guides and recipe books to promoting the various health practitioners and their services one sees online. And there are great cross-over products as well, such as vitamins or kineseology information.

So not only does niche affiliate marketing open the doors to a much larger potential group of affiliate marketing leads, but it also means you have a greater variety of products and services to fuel your niche affiliate marketing commissions, too. Another major bonus is that you have fewer experienced marketing pros to compete with in most niches as well.

While niche affiliate marketing has evolved to the point where some professional Internet marketers are in almost any niche you enter, they are spread out across all niches instead of all focusing on one area as they do in mainstream online marketing. Instead, a lot of your competition have little or no online marketing experience. In fitness, for example, some will be personal trainers, some are fitness equipment manufacturers or retailers, others will be sports medicine practitioners. All may know more about their specialty than you do, but few would really know much about niche affiliate marketing. In fact, most would be good merchants to find affiliate opportunities with, precisely because they are experts in the niche and don't know the best ways to market their products and services themselves.

If your end goal is to build a big name for yourself in the mainstream that's fine, but even then you should use your niche affiliate marketing to fine-hone your skills, learn all you can about marketing online, and ultimately finance your foray into the mainstream. While you may or may not be successful going up directly against the big dogs of online marketing, at least you'll be able to maintain your niche affiliate marketing income in the meantime in case it doesn't go as well as you'd hoped, or takes longer to reach those levels of success than you had imagined.
