Today there are so many affiliate marketing programs online that sometimes it can be hard to choose which one is right for you.

While you can be involved in more than one, you'll want to make sure you're choosing the right internet marketing affiliate program for you personally.

Here's a few tips to consider:

  1. Will it cost you anything to join? Many affiliate programs are completely free to join. Sometimes you'll find people who have developed unique products and only allow those who have purchased the product to join their affiliate program. If you have the money to put forth for the product and a use for the product, then by all means purchase it. However, if you personally don't have a need for the product there are many other affiliate programs available to you at no cost.
  2. When does the program issue their commission checks? Every program is different. Some will issue checks once a month, some once a week and some every quarter. Be sure to choose the one that fits your needs. You likely don't want to have to wait months to get your commission check; especially if money is tight. So read the rules for the program so that you know when you'll get paid.
  3. Is there a minimum payment? Some programs require that you earn a minimum amount of commissions before issuing you payment. Some only pay out when your commissions hit $50 while others will pay out as little as $10.
  4. How are referrals tracked? Does the program offer you a way to see where the clicks on your links have come from? This is very important especially for your own testing purposes to know which links are being clicked and which ones are earning you the most money. This way you can focus your attention on those products that seem to do so well.
  5. Cookies. Cookies are harmless pieces of information that reside on someone's computer after they have clicked one of your links. Most affiliate programs use tracking cookies so that they know when a sale is made, who to credit that sale to. Some cookies last for 30 days, some 90 days some a year, and in very rare cases, a lifetime. This means that if someone clicks on one of your links and doesn't purchase the product right away, you can still get credited for that sale even if that person decides to purchase 30 days ore more from now.
  6. Tiered Programs. Is the program you're looking at one tiered or two-tiered? A single tier program only pays you for the business you've personally generated while a two tier program will also pay you for any commissions earned by someone else who signed up as an affiliate that you brought into the program.
  7. How much commission do you get paid? How much do you earn from a sale? 2%, 5% or 50%? Even though you may at first be tempted to look at those programs who pay a high amount of commissions, keep in mind that the products that your merchant is offering as well as their reputation can make a huge difference in how much you earn. Earning a 5% commission on a sale of a $2,000 computer from a well-known company could end up earning you quite a bit more than an eBook that pays commissions of 50%.

These are just a few simple questions to answer for yourself before you decide to sign up with any affiliate program. Become familiar with these aspects of affiliate marketing as well as each individual companies' terms of service. This will help you decide which direction you want to take your business and will also make you a more informed and educated marketer.
