Well, I am here to tell it to you that following this advice will most likely leave you devastated and broke. The only thing great with WordPress is that it is very easy to optimize and accommodates plugins like fish to water. To help you improve on your rank I have compiled a list of things that you should do to optimize your blog. In the internet marketing circle, they say that 'content is king'. Truth be told, a search engine cannot be able to see your site and deduce what it is about; it can only read the content that you have posted and analyze it. This is why you should only post unique content that is of high quality. The other thing that you should pay attention to is the searchers that you are targeting. What keywords are they typing in the search engines? Always base your content according to how a person will look for it. Analyze how the search engines go through your content, how it evaluates it and finally how it presents it on the results pages. This will aid you in aligning yourself with the search engines. Another issue to consider is the theme that you are using on your WordPress blog. Always understand that a search engine scans your pages from the top left to the bottom right. If the theme that you are using has some funny sidebars on the top left and throws your content to the most right side of the site, think again. Make sure you choose one that is friendly to the search engines, friendly in the sense that it gives your content priority from the top left to the bottom right. This is one of the basic WordPress SEO optimization points that you should keep in mind. One more thing that you should look at is the combination of your keywords to the links and titles that you use in your site. When a search engine has gone through your content, it comes up with a variety of keywords that have appeared frequently. It then compares this list to the words found in your titles, subtitles and links: the more they tally; the better off you will be in the rankings. For those who are mostly engaged in building WordPress sites with a lot of images on them, make sure that you have used highly relevant titles and 'alt' tags in your images. In such a site, the search engines digest the little content there is and deduce what keywords to rank you for. Apart from making your site easy to navigate, relevant titles and 'alt' tags will direct the search engines on what you want to be ranked for. Finally, backlinks play a major part in WordPress SEO optimization. When it comes to link popularity, it is not how wonderful your blog is; it is how good the sites that link to you appear in the eyes of the search engine. Make sure that only highly rated sites link to you. Just a few years back, SEO Reselling was so popular that it overtook multi-level marketing (MLM) as the preferred marketing strategy. These days, though, reselling is just like any other business. It's no different from network marketing or other forms of direct-selling businesses. Almost everyone knows what an SEO Reseller is: as the term "reseller" implies, it's a person or business that basically acts as an intermediary for an SEO provider's business in various locations--often setting up shop and operating as a separate business entity. You can probably blame the downturn in demand for SEO services on bloggers who have written thousands of articles on the Web about the SEO Reselling business. From the basics of SEO Reselling to technical considerations, secrets of the trade and the latest updates--everything is revealed in blogs and sites. This has successfully undermined the "mystery" behind the business. Black Hat SEO has decreased--although there will always be those who will try to "trick" the search engines to get higher rankings, it's now "hats off" with bloggers revealing every detail of the techniques used. A lot of SEO companies used to use reselling as a strategy to expand their core business. They branded themselves as providers of services that would allow resellers to find clients and establish a business of their own (just as a subcontractor would). Following MLM principles, individuals or companies involved in reselling owned 100% of their own business, while tapping the resources of an SEO company (the provider or "manufacturer") for their resale products. Now that the concept of reselling is out in the open, the trust that was built between resellers and their clients has been broken. Clients don't want to deal with resellers, they want to deal directly with the SEO providers. As a result, many SEO Reselling firms have had to trim down employees, rearrange benefits and salaries and, in some instances, even shut down operations. Even marketing writers have predicted a major downfall for the SEO industry this year. The consensus seems to be that along with social media marketing, SEO reselling will fail to leave a significant mark in history. The only thing that could save the industry is change--a major change--that will make people believe in the relevance of SEO Reselling again; just as White Label and Private Label SEO once saved the industry from total extinction. Still, a lot of SEO hopefuls continue to defy the predictions of naysayers. Many are expanding or transferring their SEO businesses offshore, to countries that are still unfamiliar with the business. Today, SEO firms are moving their operations to Asian countries where SEO's popularity has not yet peaked. Joseph writes about SEO, Blogging, and Web Development. Since search rankings are influenced by the quality of the content included on a website, relevant content helps to drive traffic to your website. High quality content comes in a variety of forms including seasonal and evergreen. Both types have their value. One facet that quality content shares no matter its longevity is that it offers relevant, valuable information to those individuals who are seeking it. High quality content is unique, informative, and accurate, offering readers a valuable source that may have them coming back to a website for more. In an effort to reduce the number of low-quality content websites from appearing on the first page of search results, recent changes have been made to Google's algorithm used to identify relevant content and determine search engine rankings. This fact now magnifies the importance of providing quality content on a website. With the popularity of linking to strong content increasing along social media avenues, the importance of providing high quality content that offers valuable information on your website is going to increase. People searching the Internet today want search results that are relevant to their needs. They want the kind of answers to their questions they can find without having to visit a long list of websites in order to find them. Therefore, websites providing quality content are going to be the winners in the long run. Small businesses looking to expand their customer base would do well to provide useful content on their websites on a regular basis. The presence of quality content can reduce a website's bounce rate, a critical factor when it comes to promoting/selling goods and services. The inclusion of quality content that is updated on a regular basis increases the average time on site. Without that kind of activity, your business is going to struggle with success. Low Quality Content and Content Farms All too often, low-quality websites pushing poor content have repeatedly appeared on the first couple of pages for search results. This isn't what people want, no matter what they are using the Internet to do. Despite the fact that people can simply click off the website, the experience typically leaves a bad taste in the mouth of those individuals who have the misfortune to click on a low-quality website. Where do so many websites manage to obtain poorly written or useless content to put up? Typically, website owners purchase inexpensive content, steal content, or use content that has already been published on the Web. Sometimes a company copies content from other websites and places it on its own site. Duplicate content is not highly valued. Even if you want to reuse content, it makes goodsense to modify the content of a given document by a minimum of 20% to reduce the chance of being considered buplica content. In some cases, the content is obtained illegally without the permission of the owner, a clear case of copyright infringement. Always be sure to attribute the content to the original offer. In other cases, the content is obtained from a content farm, a company that employs a workforce of many writers who churn out dozens of articles each week or month for a paltry sum. Typically, the content offers limited usefulness, since it is often written in haste or with little research. A company may purchase quality content that has previously been posted on another site. Even though the information is valuable or informative, it is duplicate content that offers less value than unique, high quality content. To gain a top position for your long tail keywords on the search engine results pages, always start with high quality, relevant, and interesting content written for your target market. When searches are done online, search engines look for specific things before returning results. If you want your website to get more traffic, you should consider optimizing it so your site appears on the first page of the search results. It has been proven by many researchers that web surfers usually only review the first couple pages of search engine results. Below are a few basic ideas to help you accomplish getting on one of these pages that people actually see. Keyword research is the first step to any type of website optimization project. Compile a list of keywords that relate to the content of your website. Take a look at your competitors? Which keywords are they utilizing? Ask yourself a simple question: Do I need to reevaluate the keywords I am planning on using? Don't copy their keywords, compare them! After you have decided on a list of keywords you need to ensure that these keywords are included in your content. It's not necessary to stick them all on one page. In fact, you shouldn't do this (this is called "keyword stuffing" and is frowned upon by the search engines). Create a plan of action and spread them throughout your websites pages. Some of the top sites on the Internet have thousands of pages and these pages are filled with a variety of keywords. A good rule of thumb is to include three to five major keywords per page. Speaking of your websites pages, make sure your site is both interesting and easy to read. This is where your website structure comes into play. Confirm your sites navigation, or menu, is easy to follow (for both search engine spiders and actual people). Additionally, use simple color backgrounds and stay away from using backgrounds that are too busy. Don't add too many flashy graphics or scrolling images. Search engines look for words, like the keywords we discussed above, and can't see the actual images. For the images that you do add, be sure to optimize the file names and alt tags. Once you have done the work on your site, it's time to start link building. Work on creating as many inbound links to your site as possible. An inbound link is simply a link coming from another website. You can do this through article submissions, profile creation, social bookmarking, banner exchange programs and multiple other techniques. Utilize your keywords when linking to a particular page on your site. Stay away from link building scams that promise thousands and thousands of "free" back links. If it sounds too good to be true. well, you know the old saying. The last think you need is to get your site banned from one or all of the search engines! Track your websites progress as you further optimize your pages. Google Analytics is a powerful tool that works with the process used to find websites by search engines. Utilizing this program, or any other related program, will help you find areas to further optimize your website. There are numerous other SEO methodologies that can be utilized to increase your ranking on the search engines. The above steps should help get you started moving in the right direction. Before any website is able to make money through advertising, affiliate marketing or direct selling, people have to know that the site exists first. This is exactly what SEO aims to do. By using it, an internet marketer is able to develop a website's internet presence and searchability. Search Engines What does searchability mean? Basically this is how easily your website can be found through a search engine such as Yahoo, Google or Bing. For example, your website deals with selling computer parts, your goal is to appear on the first page of search results when someone looks for the term computer parts. The higher you are on the search results, the better. That's searchability. SEO techniques are done in order to achieve the best possible ranking for your website on a particular keyword. Keyword The keyword of a site is based on what it is all about. So if you're selling computer parts, that's your number one keyword to work on. Other applicable keywords can be computer repair, hard drives, keyboards, etc. Targeting the right keywords is essential when it comes to increasing your internet presence. Although it seems like a simple and easy task, a lot of people fail to get this part right. And when you're wrong here, everything else is pointless. SEO specialists can deal with proper keyword research. This involves building an SEO plan of attack based on several factors such as number of searches a particular word or phrase gets in a month, the length of the phrase, and many more. On and Off Page Once you know what keywords to use, you can now build on that through on page and off page optimization. On page optimization basically deals with the things on your website including the content, the coding, the design and functionalities. All of these things affect the SEO of a website and it is best to work on the on page first. The next step is off page optimization. This involves link building, social media, advertising and many more. The aim of off page optimization is to spread the word about your website. You should aim to disperse your links as much as you can. By doing so, people would find your site. Once the links and your traffic starts to go up, your search rankings will go up as well thus giving you even more traffic. And the more traffic you get, the more money goes into your pocket. Gone are the days of sprinkling keywords throughout your articles in the vain attempt of catching the eye a roving search engine spider. Today's complex algorithms which control how and where your site is indexed has more to do with human readable, quality content, organized with proper HTML semantics with title tags that accurately describe what's on the page than just drivel with keywords dropped like fairy dust. The improper use of heading tags within your content is one of the most easily overlooked search engine optimization mistakes. But what is the proper use you ask? It's pretty simple actually. First of all, you have to use the tags H1, H2, H3, H4, etc. The next important step, you have to use them in order. Joomla makes it simple to do. Templates are typically built on CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) which basically specifies font, size, color etc. for each different tag. Within the content editor area of your Joomla site, you see two drop down's, first is Styles & the second is Format. Typically "Paragraph" is the default format. To change a line of text from paragraph to a H style, highlight that row, click the Format drop down & select which H heading you'd like. What if you're not sure you're going to like what your headings look like? My suggestion is if your template didn't come with a Style Sheet, is to create your own. Create a blank article, and type out the words Paragraph, Heading 1, Heading 2, etc. Highlight each word & change the format. Save your article & print it out for a reference. This becomes important because sometimes what you see, isn't always what you get. The look can vary from your Joomla content editor to when it's posted live on your site. One more important note, don't use the default article titles. When you're editing your article look to the right of your content box and you'll see Parameters (Article) and Parameters (Advanced) Click the green triangle by the Advanced heading to expand the options. Your first option is - Show Title - Choose "No". The reason this is necessary is because by default Joomla adds the title to the top of your article when it's posted to your website. Which, while it make look OK, it's not embedded into your article using the correct Heading Tags. JJ Stroobants invites you to learn more about SEO for your Joomla site at http://ezJoomlaSEO.com.
