SEO - SEO in the Simplest Form

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is the art of making a website or page search engine friendly, which aims at showing on the first page of search results on certain terms (keywords) related to this website/page.

This process could be as complicated as a full-time job for a full team of SEO experts, or as simple as a couple of hours of work that shows results in a matter of weeks. It all depends on the keywords you want your website to rank for.

The simplify the process of SEO in this article it will be divided into two sets of tasks: on-site and off-site tasks. But before we get into these tasks you need to pick up the keywords that you can realistically rank for.

Generally the longer the key phrase the easier it is to rank for it, and the more targeted it is. So, if your website is about installing satellite dish in your local area it will be easier for you to target the key phrase that consists of what you are doing (satellite dish installation) in your city, and the tighter you go the easier it gets. Make a small list of those targeted keywords and let's start optimizing your website/page. Using a keyword tool is extremely helpful in this matter.

First let's do the on-site tasks.

• Use each keyword/phrase in the title, meta tags, header tags (h1 and h2) and at least once for every 100 words on the corresponding page.
• From each page on your website there should be at least one link to every page anchored by the corresponding keyword/phrase.

Then let's do the off-site tasks.

• Search your keywords/phrases and take note of the first 10 results. How many inbound links does every one have? Use Yahoo's site explorer for this. In order for your website/page to show on the first page of search results you need at least one more inbound link to your website/page than the least one of your competitors.
• The next step is to go out and get those links. There are many ways to get those links. RSS feed, social bookmarking, social media, commenting on other people's blogs, submitting your website to web directories, Web 2.0, and press releases are among the most used methods to generate those inbound links.

If you spam the above sources of inbound links you are not only wasting your time and energy, but also you're risking getting your domain deleted from search engine indexes, and probably losing the domain itself depending on your registrar.
