Many people have been forced to turn to the Internet to find ways to make money. One of the most popular opportunities to make money online is to join an affiliate marketing program. It is true that many Internet marketers do extremely well as affiliate marketers. They make money selling products, getting leads, or getting people to click on ads provided by PPC programs such as Google AdSense. However, there are many people who do not do as well with their affiliate marketing business. There are several reasons this is true. 1. First of all when you sell a product you only make money if the customer does not return the product. Purchasing things online and then returning them is not hard to do. Most affiliate merchants have a fairly liberal return policy which can hurt your affiliate commissions. If you sell digital information this is especially true. The reason for this is a customer gets instant access to download the product the minute their payment is approved. Oftentimes people will buy something because they're excited about it. Once that excitement wears off it's very easy to return the product. In this situation you are not going to make your commission because there is no net sale. 2. Another common problem affiliate marketers face is getting traffic to their website. You will not sell anything online without visitors first coming to your website. The World Wide Web is increasing in size every day. There are now billions of web pages that are competing for attention. Depending on the niche that your affiliate business is in it could be extremely competitive. One way around this is to try and focus on a targeted niche. This certainly does help limit the competition, but many affiliate marketers are onto this game and finding untapped niches is getting harder every day. 3. Do you want to market the exact same website your competitors are marketing? This can lead to disappointing results because you are not able to affect the sale when you use the replicated website from the affiliate merchant. Think about it this way. If there are thousands of affiliates promoting the same website on the Internet who is going to get the sale? The answer to this question lies in who gets the most traffic to their affiliate website. To make this work for you have to work twice as hard as your competitors. A more effective strategy is to create your own website and promote it. The most successful affiliate marketers are people who pre-sell their visitors on the advantages of the product they are promoting. One way to do that is to write a review about the product. Include both the positive and negative aspects of the product as you see it. This helps warm your customer up to potentially purchasing the product if you write an honest review. Affiliate marketing can be a disappointing business model to be in. This is one of the reasons you see such a high failure rate.
