SEO - Backlinking Strategies That Are Not Worth Your Time Or Money

If you search around the web or on internet marketing forums, you will find literally hundreds of ways to place links. The most important aspect of backlinking that you need to pay respect to is cost-effectiveness. The reason this is the most important is because you can spend thousands of dollars and man-hours buildings links and still get nowhere (or half as far as you would have gotten if you did things correctly). Learn what is cost-effective and what is not before you go blowing your entire bankroll trying to get your site ranked.

The least effective thing in terms of backlinking is getting multiple links from the same domains. This is especially common for those offering "bookmarking" backlinks. There's nothing wrong with links from bookmarking sites and they certainly have their place when it comes to getting your page indexed. However, two links is no better than one link from Digg, for example. I know of one particular link community where you can literally get hundreds of links from 10-12 sites, automatically, over and over again. The owner of the community says the power is that they're coming from different accounts. I know another link broker who does the same thing and offers links from 5 different accounts on each one of 100+ social bookmarking websites. This does not help. Your links need IP diversity - plain and simple.

Here's another one... If you're already going through the trouble of getting your links indexed, there may not be a point to trying to place links on blogs. That was their main upside to begin with - that they ping themselves automatically and Google indexes their pages quickly. But you should be doing this on your own anyway - so this benefit goes away. Many blog link brokers tout that links from blogs are more powerful because Google loves blogs. Doubtful! There is something to be said for the link being in the "body content" section of the blog instead of the comments section, especially when it comes to getting traffic from that link. But link security in both cases is a huge concern and PR for blogs is generally between 0-2. Additionally, you never have an ability to change the link or control the account, in either case. In most cases, these link brokers cannot even give you a report. So my advice? Unless the links are dirt cheap ($.05 or less), look away from blogs for backlinks.

There are just so many tactics you can pay for to get links. Automatic links from link farms, "aged" accounts on Web 2.0 sites, platinum accounts on article directory sites, blah blah blah! Stop wasting your time and money on factors that don't matter. Focus on these factors:

What is the PR of the domain where the link is being placed?
What kind of link security and access to the link am I getting?
Can I use anchor text?
How much is it costing per link? (If you're paying more than $.50 a link, you're in the wrong ballpark!)

Don't believe what you read from people who are trying to sell you links. Make sure that you study material from an unbiased third party and buy the most cost-efficient links you can.
