Selling a product or service online can be a challenging task to perform. Getting a product to be known by the public or to gain popularity takes time, effort, and sometimes too much money. Fortunately, affiliate marketing is there to help. Most successful Internet based businesses use affiliated programs, which are sometimes also called partner or associate programs. These programs allow companies to increase their online sales by affiliating with a website that will redirect its visitors to an offer for a marketed product. Thus the extra traffic can result in sales for that company, earning revenue value which is then shared with an affiliate through commission.

Some affiliate programs offer the option to add requirements to the product connection, or commission. For example, rather than simply leading to a partner advertising site, a website will require the costumer to fill out an information form in order to see a certain webpage. Other affiliate programs are purely based on commission sales, or on the amount of emails that are sent out on behalf of the advertising company.

These are four main types of affiliate marketing programs:

• Pay Per Impression: An older model of affiliate marketing. The idea is to pay the affiliate company a set amount of money per each thousand of visitor page views, called "page impressions." The advertised pages are typically displayed through text, a banner, or multimedia images.

• Pay Per Click: A common model based on the idea that affiliate compensation is set through the number of visitor clicks on the company's displayed advertisements. Make sure to note whether the ad keeps a static count of visitors.

• Pay Per Lead: A newer and more popular method, especially among cell phone companies. It is based on the idea that a user is lead to the merchant's website and if users perform a particular task required by the affiliate, the original website owner will be compensated.

• Pay Per Sale: The most preferred and efficient model by sellers offering affiliate programs. The affiliate is only paid per product purchase, which is done by a referred user on the advertiser's website.

Many sellers are also interested in the service of third party companies in order to build up and increase the affiliate program. When a company has been in business for a long time through a good affiliate marketing infrastructure, it often seeks to expand itself through the use of other high-traffic websites. This idea is called Affiliate Network. Finding different website owners willing to participate in an affiliate program does not only benefit the company, but it also helps to make things easier for someone new to the idea.

These various models and ideas are currently the most practiced ones in the Internet. In fact, there are several tens of thousands websites all over the world participating in some sort of affiliate program this instant. It is wise to consider taking part in an affiliate program, which will only result in a substantial income through an owned website's popularity.
