Most people who get started in affiliate marketing tend to jump in with unrealistic expectations about the time and effort it will take to make money. These people fail to realize that becoming successful at affiliate marketing on the Internet, just as with anything else, requires patience and practice. Here are 4 key guidelines to help you get started with affiliate marketing the right way. (1) Select A Niche There are arguments on both sides of this point, but one of the first things you want to understand as you get started building your affiliate marketing business is who you are selling to. Learning and understanding how to research and select a niche will save you a lot of wasted time and effort. Since you want to land in a market where people are actively buying, it's best to learn how to do effective keyword research in order to find out what people are searching for, how often they are searching, and how competitive the niche happens to be. While it is possible to compete in almost any niche, you want to be sure you pick a niche where it will be relatively easy to start. (2) Pick One Product Once you have selected the niche you will be marketing in, the next step is to pick one primary product to focus on. Avoid the temptation to want to promote a dozen different things. You want to build a marketing campaign that is focused on recommending one product. The product you pick should align well with the research you have completed telling you what people are searching for. Ensure it is a product you can be passionate about and recommend confidently because that confidence and authenticity will come through in your marketing. Clickbank, Commission Junction, LinkShare and PayDotCom are great places for you to start looking for and researching products within your target niche. (3) Select One Method of Promotion Now that you have your niche and product chosen, you want to settle on one primary method of promotion. You might choose article marketing, blogging, pay-per-click marketing, or something else -- in any event select one and then focus on it. One of the keys to building a successful affiliate marketing campaign is to become a master at your chosen method of promotion. The only way to do that is to keep applying, analyzing, and refining the results over time. You only get better through doing it over and over again. (4) Treat it Like A Job If your goal in getting started in affiliate marketing is to make money, then treat your affiliate marketing like a job or business. It cannot be a hobby if you want it to pay well. Take the time to set monthly, weekly, and daily goals, activities and tasks. Create your plan and then follow it. So many people fail because they fail to write down their ideas, schedule time to develop and implement them, and follow through. When you bring the same structure to your affiliate marketing as you would find in a job or business, you will begin to create results. (5) Find A Mentor Becoming successful at affiliate marketing is about learning. The best way to learn is to find a mentor or support group who can guide you and allow you to benefit from the mistakes they may have made without you having to make the same mistakes yourself. So find someone who is having success, can demonstrate he or she knows what you want to learn, and then plug-in and learn.
