Affiliate Marketing involves sending visitors to a merchant's website and getting a commission payment as an associate for each lead or sale. It has been used by numerous individuals around the globe to earn fat profits. However, not everyone that tries their hand at this form of marketing is successful at turning a profit. Some people fail because they do not have proper knowledge about the various terms related to this field and the way things operate in it. Affiliate, Brand, and The Customer: The 'brand' refers to the merchant or the advertiser who wishes to sell a product and employs the services of an affiliate. An 'affiliate' is a business partner who would make efforts to divert web based traffic to the website of the advertiser and would be given a share of every sale or a certain amount of fees in lieu of every lead that has been generated via the website of the affiliate. The 'customer' is the internet user who would first visit the website of the affiliate, find the advertisement of the brand and navigate to his or her website. The customer may or may not buy the product or service of the advertiser at that instant. It is quite possible that the customer may make an inquiry or fill his contact details. Revenue Sharing: The affiliates are given a certain commission from every sale that occurs when a customer navigates to the website of the seller via that of the affiliate and buys anything from the seller. It is also possible that the affiliate is paid a certain fixed amount by the advertiser every time a customer visits the website of the seller after he or she has clicked the link of the advertiser's website on that of the affiliate, whether the visit results into a sale or filling of contact details. This is known as revenue sharing. Affiliate Network: An affiliate network helps both advertiser and the affiliate to perform numerous functions. The advertiser can find various affiliates who would help him or her by diverting web based traffic to his or her website. Further, the merchant can make the necessary payment to the affiliate with the help of the affiliate network. Moreover, the advertiser can lay his or her hands on various software tools which help him or her to generate certain reports, track the number of hits and reach out to the affiliates. It serves a number of useful purposes for the affiliates as well. The affiliates can meet the merchants who can pay them handsomely in lieu of the web traffic generated by them. It is also possible that the affiliates may need to pay a certain amount of fees for joining the affiliate networks.
