WS - Starting Out In Web Design

Tuesday, 15 November 2011 14:00

These days, any person with a PC can put up a web site. The problem is that unless you have an understanding of design and basic graphic layout, your page may not pull in many visitors. You need to understand the basic design principles for web sites, as well as how to make an optimized graphics for websites, to gain and hold a viewer's interest.

The first element to consider before you begin creating a website is its overall design. All websites should have a distinctive look and theme. Ask yourself what the theme of your site should be. Some of the decisions about the mood and theme of your site hinges upon the audience for the site. For example, a website that sells Halloween costumes for adults could have a Halloween theme and a spooky mood, whereas a site for children might have a fun or playful mood.

Draw out a sketch of what the website will look like on a poster board. Refrain from getting too fancy or making the site design too involved. Web style gurus such as Jakob Nielsen recommend keeping a site simple and clean to help readers navigate the site effectively. A site with too much clutter or detail can look amateurish and can be difficult to read.

When you make your sketch, do not worry about adding content or individual graphics yet. Instead, focus on placing particular elements such as the navigation, the logo or main graphics, and the content. For example, mark out where the logo will go, even if you haven't designed it yet. This sketch will give you a draft to work from as you refine the design and begin coding the site.

After you are satisfied with the general layout, begin designing graphics that complement the theme, mood and contents of the website. Unlike print, colour and graphics on the web are free so use colour where it is appropriate. Graphics for the web should be simple enough to view in low resolution but attractive and professional-looking. If you include text in the logo or graphics, make sure to test them in several resolutions to ensure that the text is readable.

If you aren't sure where to start, don't worry. There is help available and all web and graphic designers had to start somewhere. One of the best ways to learn web and graphic design for the web is to read some books that cover the topics. Your public library or university library probably has dozens of texts on these topics as well as HTML, XHTML, JavaScript, and any other coding language that you might find useful.

Alternately, take a course at a university. The advantage of university courses is that they teach you the latest graphic design software as well as web and design principles. You may also be able to purchase the software at a reduced price from the university bookstore.

Finally, the best way to begin designing a website and web graphics is just to dive in. Gather your resources and do your research, and then start designing. Just like writing an essay, you can always make additional drafts. If you keep the website design and the graphics simple, you can keep drafting until you have a well-designed and professional-looking site.

Regional search terms will help narrow down results, like web design northampton or graphic design northampton

WS - Three Tips That Will Make Your Website a Success

Wednesday, 09 November 2011 14:00

In today's digital age, it seems that everybody has a website, whether it's a website for their business, place of work, or even a website like a blog that you use to advertise your services, or even just comment on the news stories of the day. But with so many websites available, how do you become a.com success story?

The answer is, well there are many ways that you can become successful online, because it depends on you, or website and your goals. The people that formed some of the most popular sites on the web, such as Amazon.com and eBay.com were prepared to put in a lot of work before they made their site live, during the site launch and even after the site launch. What a lot of people don't realise is that the work never stops with a website, especially if you want it to be found be potential users, customers, and even, investors. When it comes to really making your website work for you, you have to consider three things: research, advertising and engagement.

Research is for planning a website, so if you're building a website from scratch you need to know who your competitors are, the market that you are going into and also what your competitors are lacking. However, if you have an existing website, then this can also be applied to it, because you can improve on the site just by following the right steps. The research stage will take some time, but don't lose heart, it will be worth it when you launch the site.

One thing to bear in mind that a lot of people forget about when building and launching a site, is advertising. If you neglect to advertise, how will potential customers find your site? The answer is that they won't, so avoid this pitfall by looking into the cost of advertising while you are creating the site. When it comes to advertising, the level you choose will depend on your budget, and depending on your budget you could go to a big advertising company, or choose a smaller, SEO company, you will give you advice on how to better advertise your site, without having to spend big bucks on a huge advertising campaign.

The term engagement can confuse a lot of people, but when it's used here, it simply means, engaging with, or better still, communicating with your customers and informing of them what's happening with your site. This could be as simple as sending a weekly e-newsletter, or maintaining a social media presence on sites like Twitter and Facebook, where you respond to customer queries and most importantly, feedback and complaints. If you hire an SEO company, this is something that they can advise you on.

Making a website a success doesn't have to be too difficult, and it doesn't have to cost the earth, just take your time, consult the experts, such as SEO companies and practitioners, and always, always, listen to your customers, because they will provide the best feedback to help you with your site.

WS - Elements To Follow When Designing A Website
Sunday, 06 November 2011 13:00

Everybody who is considering having their own website will definitely want to have a good web design that stands out. This is needed so as to have a unique identity in an ever-growing internet community. There is more to a site being designed pretty or pleasant to look at to make it good. You should also consider some factors that will overall enhance the design that you have.

The most important thing and something not really prioritized is the domain name. Choosing a good domain name is critical in making your project work. It has to short and catchy. Likewise it must also be easy to remember so that it will have high recall value over a long time.

For some of us that may want to make use of our websites for purposes of furthering our affiliate profits, this next piece of advice might not be so palatable. You must limit your advertisements. Try to use at the most tow to three outside links or advertisements if you have to. Keep the focus of the reader on your site and not on the banners and side panels.

A good design will show right away who your target audience is. Just by giving it a quick glance you can tell if it is for young or old, conservative or radical and so on. Choose a template with the corresponding colors to match the mood you want to set for your particular audience. Also your design has to be dynamic. It should be easy to tweak or change in the future so as to maintain a captive audience and keep their level of interest up.

Many newcomers also put a lot of pictures and graphics on their pages. But who can really blame anyone for this, as showing the world certain pictures and the like has become second nature for almost everyone. However, do keep graphics to a minimum so that focus is kept on the main gist and message of the site. Not having too many graphics and pictures will assist you in having faster load times, which is a critical component also.

Due to the ever decreasing attention span by many internet users, if your page takes longer than ten seconds to load then you are dead. Dead in the way that they will close the tab linked to your address and go to another one. Thus always aim for having faster load times in your design by not having too many graphics.

A standard rule for any site to be passable is to have an internal search engine and also a site map. Of the two, the site map can be deemed as the most important. This Is because the site map is the one scanned by search engines when queries are sent. Thus a good site map will increase your rankings and your hits as well.

Thus we have covered some important aspects of what to include in your design ideas. Although it is not limited alone to these concepts discussed in this article, they can be considered as critical and should not be left out. Always include the items just discussed above in your next design endeavor.

WS - Why Joomla Is More Accurate to Create Complex Websites
Thursday, 03 November 2011 13:00

If you are planning to develop a website there are many choices as far as the content management system is concerned. WordPress, Drupal and Joomla are the most popular ones. But you should nail in on Joomla development when it comes to creating a complex website. Let's get it straight WordPress serves as great blogging platform but when it comes to achieving complex functionalities and accuracy they hardly match the robustness and performance of Joomla. Over the years Joomla developers have developed expertise in making website more interactive and attractive for the users.

Advantages That Joomla Offers Over For a Complex Website

  • First things first, coding is one of the major challenges in developing a website and Joomla keeps it to bare minimum compared to other popular platform. This allows you to keep the code base short even though you will define lots of functionality for your website. A complex website created in Joomla will load faster compared to one developed on any other platform.

  • The built in WYSIWYG editor makes Joomla the most preferred choice for many developers in the world. It is ideal if you are looking to create a highly functional and robust website without using extensions. Alternately if you want to like to use extensions and plugins the content layout and the extensions library enhance the ease of development.

  • Multi-lingual support is one of the primary requirements of complex websites. Joomla cms development excels in this field as it recognizes a user's operating system and automatically displays a site in the user's language if it is available.

  • Joomla is the best platform as it meets all the SEO requirements. You can optimize every page in the website if you want. It allows you to develop an advanced HTML layout with no nestled tables making it easy to read for crawlers.

  • It offers great flexibility when it comes to creating ecommerce and community websites which are complex by nature. The website backend that Joomla offers is unmatched as you will have complete authority over the website. Managing similar websites with WordPress or Drupal will prove to be a herculean task.

  • Last but not the least Joomla which is PHP based offers you huge community support from thousands of PHP developers from around the world. Though others CMSs also have their community support they are miles behind Joomla developers when it comes to sharing of ideas and resolving queries.

Having said all that you also ought to keep in mind that developing complex website will test the skills and expertise of the developers to the core. So, don't compromise on the quality of Joomla developers that you hire for your project as the quality will be reflected throughout your entire site. Advanced Joomla development isn't everybody's cup of tea and you shouldn't fall for tall claims made by development firms. Take a look into their portfolio; check out the appearance, functionality and performance of the websites and you will easily zero in on the best developers in business.

PixelCrayons has a team of the best joomla developers who have great experience in Joomla Joomla development, Joomla installation & customization service.

WS - How Does Web Design for Mobile Differ From Regular Website Design?
Monday, 31 October 2011 13:00

Web page design for mobile phones and related devices is rather different than an archetypal website design. The first step is to mull over and finalize the medium you are going to use. However it is also essential to be aware that there are two types of handsets with admittance to the internet world. Proper cell phones consist of both smart phones as well as web facilitated mobile phones. Smart phones in fact access the World Wide Web just as a miniature desktop or laptop. But internet enabled mobiles alternatively, can only avail mobile online sites.

Mobile websites are web portals that finish in the expansion, .obi in place of .com, .org or .net. They don't display images, only content. These kinds of cells cannot just see your usual website. A .mobi website is a derived online site that is specially styled for your mobile customers. This can include realistic graphics for the mobile phones that can perceive them, and still be approached in a method that can meet the requisites of cell phone users.

Web Design for mobile, as said has lesser and tinier graphics. Even the text will be less as mobile users prefer simple and concise message. The target audience who visit your website through mobile phone will not have large amount of time to go through lengthy content. So bullet points are more than enough to convey your idea. While creating a mobile web page design, your course-plotting should be very lucid, short and even snappy. You need to develop it tremendously simple for users to locate whatever they are searching for. Owing to this, you can narrow down your content to a fewer pages, say 3 to 7 pages. Though the specific pages should absolutely have contact info like cell number and location map. This is one of the major causes why people search for an online portal to achieve their requirements and make it trouble-free for them to reach you. Do not forget to tag on RSS feeds so that the likely buyers can subscribe your goods or services easily. Also, you can use the same feature to update special offers and events in your mobile web design company. Another important aspect to have a clear idea about is what makes one an expert mobile phone web designer.

If you are contemplating to extend your business through a mobile website design, it would be better to hire a professional who have contributed to this field. She/he alone knows the inadequacies for diverse handsets in the market, how to make your latest online portal appear in the top rank and also how to link your .mobi to your.com. Bear the said suggestions in mind when seeking or consulting a cell phone web designer and you will not have much hassle in fruitfully initiating your website for handsets.

WS - Can A Good Website Benefit Your Business?
Friday, 28 October 2011 13:00

Website design is a funny old thing. As with many older digital profession, it's something that many people claim they can do. However, doing it well is an entirely different thing. So, is it worth spending money on quality? Keep reading, and maybe we can answer that.

First of all, it's worth considering the increase in visual representation that a good website can bring. Through tools such as search engine optimisation and pay per click advertising, it is possible for any modern site to attract visitors purely by being there. However, a website that isn't designed by an expert can be far more problematic to index into the Google rankings, meaning that your traffic could be adversely affected as a result. Whether or not you consider this worth the risk is of course entirely your decision, and largely down to whether or not your business depends on online sales.

Secondly, it is worth considering the purely aesthetic problems that can arise from having a website that is created on the cheap. As an image, your website is a pure representation of your business, which is why it's important to observe the fact that if you cut corners, it might well show. Of course, you could get lucky, but with the business world being as cut throat as it is, do you think you can get away with a website that looks anything less than professional? It means that you might end up looking unprofessional yourself, which isn't really the image you want to promote! It might well be worth paying for the best this time.

It can be customizable. One of the benefits of modern web design is that it's very variable, and most aspects of a business can be promoted. If you're a graphic design firm, for instance, you can have a slide show of your work available. If you're an online store, then you can easily set up a variety of different products and delivery options. A less capable web development Nottingham company will likely not be able to provide as many options, or you may find that the site itself is less effective and has certain problems. None of these things are something that you need to be worrying about!

Finally, it is always worth considering whether a website that is poorly designed will actually end up costing more money in the long run. With a high quality build, you will usually find that the site works in a very efficient way, and that there aren't many bugs that occur - usually any small teething troubles will end up being fixed by the developer anyway. If you order a website at a lower price, the smaller amount of time spent on the creation is usually something that results in potential problems. After all, when it comes to coding everything has to be checked and re-checked! If you have to spend further cash on solving problems, then it might be worth just paying for the quality website initially.

So many people are of the belief that because they can use a computer and know their way around a website, they can design their own site too. What these people don't realise is just how difficult it is to create a high quality website. Experts in Web Development Nottingham spend hours working on sites, so how do you do it? Read on to find out.

WS - Why Sales Letter Software Gets You More Conversions
Monday, 24 October 2011 13:00

Sales letter software programs create a 'ready to go' sales page for you when you input a few key terms and phrases into the program. When you hit the create button, you'll have a good sales page that is ready for a copy and paste into your website. The benefit of a program like this is it will have the sales language that sounds good when you read it, it will have the right balance of value, and it will be consistent with what most formats are for sales pages.

Using sales letter software is just flat-out smart, especially when you're starting out in the information marketing industry. It will get you a lot more conversions on the front end with your product compared to what you would get if you were to write the letter yourself.

I mean, think about it. Look how much stuff you're doing just to get your business off the ground.

You've created a squeeze page, you're driving traffic to that squeeze page, you're building a relationship with your subscribers, you may be promoting a few affiliate products, you've hopefully created your first product, but ultimately you want to sell your own product and keep all of the money.

So you're doing all of this AND you have to create a kick-butt sales letter to get people to buy your product.

Seriously... it's a big ordeal to create a sales letter. That's a lot of pressure for you to deal with, and all you really want to do is sell your product, provide great value to your buyers and make some money in the process.

That's why using sales letter software is a great idea to start with. It will get you going, it will get you better conversions than if you created the letter yourself, and that's the most important thing right now.

Now is the sales letter going to be perfect to your liking? No.

Is the letter going to sound like you sound if you were talking to me right now? Probably not.

Is the letter going to have the flare and pizazz of your writing style? Most definitely not.

But it's still a far better solution to start with until you get more experience writing your own sales letters.

Here's a tip to get you experience. Make two sales letters where one is from the software and one is your own. Test them with A/B testing and see which one works better. As you get results coming in, make the appropriate changes until your sales letter out performs the software version.

However for the time being to get you going, use sales letter software to get you sales.

WS - Website Building Starts With Your Freedom of Choice
Sunday, 23 October 2011 13:00

The freedom of website administration can be a challenge when your website is designed by someone else or is one of the available "free" deals. A freebie website may sound appealing in the beginning with money as a consideration, and of course, who doesn't plan their website with the money factor as a part of the constructive considerations. The question arises; is saving cash for a "free" website or shelling out for a professional worth compromising the freedom of ownership when it comes to your very own website?

Like me you may not have the time to learn the skills that are needed to create a quality website that you can be proud of and want to share. There are alternatives when the skill or time is lacking, and with all the offers that we are confronted with in the net, it may be confusing to decide what suits you best.

Here are a few points that you may want to reflect upon before making your choice.

Free to be?

It cannot be yours if you take the offer of a free website and have less than 10 colors and 5 templates to choose from, if you are fortunate enough to even have that much choice. It cannot be called yours when the domain name (web address) is not yours to choose. It cannot be called yours if you cannot up-date as you please, when you please. It cannot be called yours when you do not have a choice who will advertise on "your" website. Yes money has been saved, but at the price of the pride of owner ship and the enjoyment of creation as well as a pleasing experience for your targeted viewers.

Design; take it or leave it.

To trust an experienced designer is certainly an alternative, you may have a sense of freedom with colors and design but you will be saying hello to your wallet and goodbye to its contents. Choice may not be a sacrifice by finding a designer that you can work with from the beginning and throughout the ownership of your website. You should find out up front if the designer will always be available to make updates when and how you choose but if the designer says; here is your website with no future modifications possible, is it then yours?

Not all templates are created equal.

A paid for pre-template within a hosting plan is one of the best available choices for those who are just starting out, want to switch from a freebie or maybe you are in a designer lock-down. Be careful of those who create and offer their templates as a take it or leave it type situation, look for freedom to design within the pre-template itself and the chance to up-date your design whenever you please. When there is a large number of pre-templates to choose from it may cause slight exhaustion when deciding, but with more templates available and the freedom of self design creation within the template there is a better chance that your choice will not be everybody else's choice.

So between freebies, designers, pre-templates and the administration of what is important to you as a webmaster of your website; make the confident choice of creative freedom.

If you're thinking about starting or are already involved in building an eCommerce business, then learn from my Linking Journal as I document my journey, give advice and link with tools and knowledge.
