No matter what route you chose, both affiliate marketing and creating your own product can make you a lot of money when done properly. In order to know which one is better you have to be aware of the pros and cons of both.

What is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing is basically you selling someone else's product for a residual or non-residual commission. There are lots of affiliate companies out there where some are short term affiliate programs where you can make a lot of money in a short period of time, but those type of companies do not last. There are also lifetime affiliate programs that provide you with long-term residual income. So even when you're retired, you can still be making a profit.

The bad part about affiliate marketing is that you do not have full control of the product your selling. They often give you a capture page for you to use to refer other people.

Affiliate marketing also pays you once per month which means you cannot take your money out whenever you want. If you're a little impatient then this might suck.

Creating Your Own Product

Creating your own product is something that's a little more profitable when done correctly. Creating your own product develops loyal subscribers that enjoy your material and are also willing to purchase from you over and over again. You have more control on how to promote and sell your products online because you are not selling anyone else's for a commission. And when it comes to getting paid, you get paid immediately after purchase in contrast to getting paid once a month with affiliates.

A problem with creating your own product is it's a process that takes a lot more time and is a little more difficult than affiliate marketing. In comparison to affiliate marketing, you do not get paid as fast and your product is not as established as an affiliate program.

My Opinion

What I recommend is that if you are new to internet marketing use Affiliate programs as your training wheels and once you start making some income and building a list then slowly move towards creating your own products.
